New Moons are a time for wishing; they are a time for planting new ideas and desires that you want to cultivate and grow. This New Moon occurs in the sign of Capricorn, a determined and focused sign; Capricorn is about achieving, materializing, or succeeding. Capricorn is a cardinal Earth sign, so this is an excellent time to initiate whatever you want to accomplish. A task-oriented but a restrained sign, Capricorn gives us the discipline we need to succeed. With Capricorn, we get serious about what we want to do and how we move forward to get it done. It is a great time to roll up your sleeves and get to work.

At the beginning of January 2021, the Sun is in Capricorn. It will move into Aquarius on the 20th of the month. Saturn rules Capricorn while Uranus rules Aquarius (although traditionally Saturn rules both signs), so there will be a palpable shift at the end of the month, out with the old and in with the new! Interestingly there will be a square between Saturn in Aquarius and Uranus in Taurus for a good deal of 2021; square aspects suggest conflict in the form of challenges that need overcome. Saturn in Aquarius represents social discipline, while Uranus in Taurus represents earth-shattering change. Expect some challenges moving forward this year, necessary challenges that must occur, and essential tensions that need managing. It is an exciting mix of keeping some of the old while creating space for the new; try not to throw the baby out with the bathwater, as they say. Use discernment to know how much to keep and how much to toss.

We can expect to work at sorting out what standards to keep and bring forward, what relics to leave behind forever in the past, and what new, innovative ideas to use in creating our fresh vision of social change. Remember, the Jupiter/Saturn Great Conjunction moved into Aquarius at the Solstice and initiates a new societal era; create consciously, in harmony with fairness for all.

Mercury, the planet of communication, begins January in Capricorn and shifts into Aquarius on the 9th of the month. It goes retrograde on January 30th, lasting until February 20th. Conversations change from practical matters at hand and become about social ideas and new ways of thinking. But, just as that conversation gets up and running, it stalls out and goes inward with the retrograde period. At this time, it is best to mentally labor out the details and implement them once Mercury goes direct again. Using the time wisely, we ask ourselves what new ideas we want to see materialize, then go within to develop the plan of action we initiate when Mercury resumes direct motion.

The party is over for Venus in Sagittarius once she moves into Capricorn on January 9th. She will become more practically focused and act more responsibly. And while she is busy cooling her heels, coming off the holidays, Mars in Aries will shift signs too.

Mars moved into Aries in the summer and has stayed there for six months, which is unusual as it generally transits through a sign for six weeks. It will move from Aries into Taurus on January 7th, which will be another energy shift. Aries is fiery and quick-moving, where Taurus is earthy and plods along, so a definite slowing down period is at hand. Here in the states, this will happen right after Congress certifies the election, so perhaps a resolution to the election is at hand, and some of the fiery hot tempers will cool? Fingers crossed!

However, expect the unexpected as Uranus is retrograde in Taurus and goes direct on January 14th, bringing a welcomed forward movement. Yet, on January 20th, inauguration day here in the states, Mars and Uranus are exactly conjunct. The Moon in Aries is also in their mix. Feelings of anger could arise, giving opportunity for erratic action. Mars and Uranus are in a fixed sign, so they are a bit stubborn; Mars in Taurus is slow to anger, so that combination may simply point to steady forward movement despite fiery feelings. Which, given the current state of disarray in the US, actually could be what's unexpected!

Whichever way you take it, change is in the air, and here in the states, we are turning the page.

As NEW MOONS are for planting new ideas, and this New Moon occurs just before Uranus goes direct, let's consciously plant seeds for the fair and forward social movement initiated at the Solstice by the Great Conjunction/Great Mutation. And don’t forget a little something for yourself as well!
