Sagittarius New Moon 2021

This month’s NEW MOON Total Solar Eclipse falls in the Fire sign of Sagittarius at 12 degrees 22’ December 4, 2021 @ 12:43 AM MST/3:43 AM EST.

Sow JOY! Seek Truth.

The Sun begins the month of December in Sagittarius, where it will remain until moving into Capricorn at the winter solstice on December 22nd. The Sun in Sagittarius is a breath of fresh air after being in Scorpio, but it still has a healthy dose of dramatic passion courtesy of its fiery nature. Sagittarius is expansive, joyful, can be “too much” at times, is concerned with higher learning, and is always on a quest to borders that lie just beyond. We find the galactic center, the point of expansion into the unknown universe, in Sagittarius. The centaur Chiron, half-man/half-horse, is associated with Sagittarius and reminds us we can heal when we accept our humanness and divinity, the known AND unknown portions of ourselves. The questing journey involves finding our Truth, embracing our path, and expanding our Selves so we may heal, knowing all things need not be perfect along the way.

As this New Moon is part of the eclipse season set into motion last month, expect continued transformation that will expand and enlighten you. The energy of Scorpio reaches deep down into the darkness; Pluto (ruler of Scorpio) is the god of the Underworld. By contrast, Jupiter (ruler of Sagittarius) is a Sky god, god of the heavens, and ruler of the other gods. Jupiter is associated with lightness and levity. So the extremes between heaven and hell, light and dark, or the highs and lows of life, might be more prominent at this time. Making it all the more important to embrace this roller coaster we call life and enjoy the ride!

Mercury is in Sagittarius, lightening up our view and giving us a more optimistic perspective. On December 14th, it will move into Capricorn, and, at that time, we will become a bit more practical and grounded. Until then, enjoy the optimism! Mercury in Sagittarius is quick and intuitive energy, knowing something before you understand how you know it. Trust what you intuit when Mercury is in Sagittarius. It is a sign of Truth-seeking but be cautious not to over-inflate, getting too full of yourself. Just because you know something intuitively does not mean that you are superior to others OR that you need to share. Be warned. Fanatic superiority is an Achille's heel for Sagittarius! Humility is not traditionally associated with this sign; it comes at the end of the month with Mercury’s shift into Capricorn (spoiler of all things fun).

Speaking of seriousness, Venus shifted into Capricorn back in November and will stay in the sign until March 2022. That’s quite a stay. Venus begins December in direct motion, turns retrograde on the 19th, then goes direct again at the end of January. As always, retrograde periods are for us to reflect inward, slowing down and turning inside to see our progress or lack thereof, just in time for the holidays! As Capricorn is concerned with mastery, this retrograde period provides insight into where we have mastered our relationship with ourselves or where we need to do so. When we are in the right relationship within, we are better able to attempt relationships without. With Venus in Capricorn, we have the opportunity to act responsibly in relationships with others but must begin with ourselves first!

Mars begins the month in Scorpio, shifting into Sagittarius on December 14th. At that time, the desire to be intense and driven will give way to a little more pep in the step. The combination of Sagittarius/Capricorn energy is the holiday season. Indulge responsibly. Enjoy the accomplishments of the hard work you put in all year. Lighten up and settle in for the grace that the winter solstice brings - quiet and reflective downtime. Scorpio Mars drives the busyness of the holiday season at the beginning of the month, accomplishing tasks and getting desires met. When it transits into Sagittarius, it is less driven and more celebratory. Any actions we took or uncovered while Mars was in Scorpio will get a light shined on them, or they could become exaggerated, with Mars in Sagittarius. Remember, we all have free will and choice; acting for our highest good is always a great way to go!

Jupiter, the ruler of Sagittarius, continues its journey through Aquarius throughout the remainder of the year until it shifts into its new home, Pisces, on December 30th. Jupiter transits take a year to complete, so 2022 will be the year of Jupiter in Pisces - until it isn’t. Aquarius Jupiter continues to expand our awareness of social issues and social justice/injustice. It offers good fortune for the advancement of society as a whole while exaggerating areas that need attention. If one is tired of the last year of social causes and debates, one can expect more compassion and potential for forgiveness and expanded societal care in 2022. However, as we know, Jupiter can exaggerate too. So, we may see a rise in checking out via fantasy or escapism. Perhaps activism for drug abuse or spiritual deception will emerge mid-year? Jupiter in Aquarius worked to highlight the causes needed to evolve humanity. Jupiter in Pisces may inspire us to care about what we’ve learned, providing us with the compassion to act upon what we know. Mars and Jupiter are square at this New Moon, so take care not to lash out at others in an exaggerated fashion; it’s simply a better use of this energy to get stuff done.

Saturn remains in Aquarius for the month, in direct motion. Saturn in Aquarius (traditional ruler of this sign) gives the mind an intellectual understanding of the needs and rights of others, the true basis for humanitarian cooperation. As Saturn continues to move through Aquarius, this is the focus of its attention. As we know, 2021 has been the year of Saturn vs. Uranus, with Uranus considered the “new” ruler of Aquarius. As we develop the abilities to understand the need for rules in society, the freedom that accompanies disciplined order, and the evolution of the whole of humanity, we are better able to surrender to the uncertainty that Uranus brings, without the need to manifest revolution via destruction. Change requires expansion beyond the “norm,” but it cannot occur when we are stuck in our ways. I wonder if this square is working to elevate our minds to a better understanding of brotherhood for all, change through orderly chaos? We shall see.

It is a blessing to be alive in such exciting times! BREATHE!

Taurus Uranus remains retrograde for the month, continuing its earthquake energy both within and without. This month is fruitful for reflecting upon whether you are struggling against the changes that wish to occur or surrendering to the cosmic flow. The fixed signs of Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius feel this energy intensely, and fixed signs do not submit easily. Perhaps embracing the idea that “change is the only constant in life” is in order? Some of the unexpected surprises Uranus has brought may calm down this month. Enjoy the lull, and rest assured change is still occurring.

Neptune in Pisces begins retrograde but turns direct early in the month on December 2nd. Neptune is square this New Moon and Mercury, so exaggerated passions based in confusion may still be the story. As it turns direct, perhaps the fog we have been experiencing will lift a bit. Remember to use the energy of Sagittarius to pursue the Truth so we can clear up any messes. It takes effort, but it is in our best interests. Neptune is at home in Pisces, and confusion and escapism are just a few of its offerings. Spiritualizing is another of its gifts, gracing us with opportunities to have compassion, forgiveness, and tenderness, both for Self and others, should misconceptions take hold.

As NEW MOONS are for planting new emotional seeds, embrace the wandering nature of Sagittarius, its call to freedom and independence, and sow seeds of JOY in your Self as you pursue Truth on your quest.
